While I’m not very active on social media, nor a consistent user of the following platforms, I think sharing a list of websites that I frequent every now and then may be helpful, especially since some of these sites can strike up a conversation about mutual interests with friends or new acquaintances.
AlternativeTo
One of the biggest online software discovery hubs that suggests alternatives for all kinds of computer software is this crowd-sourced platform called “AlternativeTo”. I first came across it around early 2017. Later, when I couldn’t find a certain tool, I decided to create a profile and contribute to the platform. Since then, I’ve been adding my own software finds, editing, and updating information on tools I was curious to try out. I’ve also created one of the most-liked lists on the website.
GoodReads
Ever since I moved to Turkey, my access to physical books has become very limited, and as a result, my love for reading dropped significantly. I haven’t finished a single book since 2014. However, during my military service in 2022, I decided to develop a reading habit. While I can’t say I’ve fully succeeded, I began utilizing my long travels on Istanbul’s transportation to read books about topics that intrigue me while at the same time are not directly relevant to my work or field of study. To keep my account somewhat organized I categorize the books I’ve finished reading into two tags: (eng) for books I read in English and (ara) for Arabic.
Kitsu
During my university years, I got into anime (which was already the mainstream dubbed “cartoon” for kids in my home country). I occasionally fill my free time with short anime every once in a while. I keep track of the anime I’ve watched or want to watch using Kitsu.
Backloggd
I started playing video games at the age of 5 and continued my childhood somewhat addicted to them. As I grew up I broke away from that addiction, but I still see a lot of value in certain types of games, mainly single-player platformer and story-based action games. That’s why they’re my main go-to in my spare time. I like to keep track of the games I’ve played or plan to play in the future using Backloggd.
